Announces Full Ultraviolet LED Product Group Featuring New Packaging Styles
and Narrower Bandwidth For Variety Of Emerging Applications

BivarOpto™, the Optoelectronics
Division of Bivar, Inc., introduces
a full complement of innovative Ultraviolet LED devices to answer a broadening
variety of applications requiring narrower bandwidth performance and economies
of scale for device installation and performance. The new product group
introduces two new wavelengths with excellent operating efficiency and
industrial temperature ranges. The new improved bandwidth devices are
anticipated to find immediate opportunities in a wide variety of applications
including automotive, medical, industrial and new emerging biometrics/security
areas such as forensic science and crime scene investigations.
The first to offer
an industry standard high powered Ultraviolet (UV) LED Series in early
2002, with their T-1
(3mm) and T-1
3/4 (5mm) 400nm UV devices, the company witnessed significant customer
interest in further developing these and improved wavelength devices in
additional industry-standard packages. BivarOpto has now expanded the
UV group to include the 3mm and 5mm packages, industry’s first TO-92
extended life, high powered all metal and glass encapsulated UV LED,
and an all-new industry-standard 1206 surface
mounted discrete UV LED package. This diversity of packaging offers
designers a broad spectrum of possibilities for compact LED installations,
as these solid-state ultraviolet (UV) devices provide increased energy
efficiency and related cost economies, and assure longer life compared
to bulkier, non-solid state UV lighting.
They offer a practical
alternative for many types of portable or battery-powered test and detection
devices, such as the medical field, where UV LEDs can be used for bio-luminescence
and as a light source for lower spectrum analyzers. Accurate finger print
identification and counterfeit bill detection are examples of use in the
security and law enforcement field. Depending on the device package selected,
viewing angles range from 30° to 140°, can be achieved. Operating
temperature ranges from -20° to +85°C, feature a typical radiant
flux of 12mW per chip and a typical stable wavelength from 390 to 410nm.
All UV LED devices demonstrate high resistance to shock and vibration
vs. traditional filament-based light sources.
“We have worked closely
with several core customers, developing a highly versatile product group
that immediately addresses the needs across many leading and emerging
uses of UV LED devices”, said Anthony
Vilgiate, Bivar Vice President, Strategic Business Development. “We
are developing a range of lower wavelength products in the near term to
address a host of new applications opportunities that the 400nm product
simply can’t support. Bivar has been actively partnering with industry
leaders to further develop this exciting technology and bring commercially
viable UV products to life.”
